Amani takes inspiration from Comme Des Garçons’ black and white shift dress displayed at the Unpicking Couture exhibition, exploring modularity in fashion to create a garment that can be worn in multiple ways.

“So for me, the theme that stood out to me in Unpicking Couture was, what can couture look like in the future? And that ties in really well with modular fashion. Couture is usually these incredible big gowns that are worn for these big events by a certain clientele, certain people, and you never see them again. But can couture exist in our everyday life? Can it be part of our everyday life? That’s what I wanted to explore in this project.”

This project challenges the norms of couture through deep analysis of modular fashion. The aim is to transform and transcend the wearer, tapping into a new-found confidence that was once lost. Modularity and transformative fashion are at the heart of this project, designed to be repurposed and worn in multiple ways, creating new silhouettes with each look. Fastenings are a key component to allow versatility and functionality, hence the use of elasticated cord and toggles. Couture isn’t just about high-end garments that are worn on certain occasions, they can be functional too, and exist in our every day life.
